Getting Started with PSX Portfolio Management

What is PSX Portfolio Management?

Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), formerly known as the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE), is one of the oldest and largest stock exchanges in South Asia. It currently lists over 500 companies across sectors including banking, cement, oil & gas, textiles, and technology.

Managing a PSX portfolio means systematically tracking which stocks you own, at what prices you bought them, how much commission you paid your broker, and what your current profit or loss looks like — across every holding, at any point in time.

Without proper portfolio management, most investors rely on rough mental calculations or scattered spreadsheets. This leads to missed insights, inaccurate P&L figures, and poor decision-making.

Why Manual Tracking Fails PSX Investors

PSX broker statements are often delayed, complex, and hard to reconcile. Common problems investors face:

  • Multiple broker accounts: If you trade through more than one broker, consolidating holdings becomes a spreadsheet nightmare.
  • Commission complexity: PSX brokers charge commission, CDC charges, and sometimes withholding tax — all deducted differently per broker.
  • Weighted average cost: If you buy the same stock at different prices over time, manually calculating your average cost per share is error-prone.
  • Real-time P&L: Spreadsheets can't pull live PSX prices, so your P&L is always stale unless you manually update it.

Setting Up Your First PSX Portfolio

Here's how to get started with PSX PORTFOLIOS in under 10 minutes:

  1. Create your account: Sign up with your email address and verify with OTP. No credit card required — the platform is completely free.
  2. Create a portfolio: Give it a name (e.g., "Main Portfolio" or your broker name like "AKD Portfolio"). You can create unlimited portfolios.
  3. Configure commission slabs: Go to Settings and add your broker's commission structure. PSX PORTFOLIOS supports both per-share and percentage-of-value commission types.
  4. Record your trades: Enter each of your BUY trades — stock symbol, quantity, price, and date. The system fetches PSX historical prices automatically if you forget the exact price.
  5. Watch your dashboard: Your portfolio dashboard immediately shows current value, total investment, and unrealized P&L with live PSX prices.

Understanding Your PSX Dashboard

Once you've entered your trades, your dashboard shows several key metrics for each holding:

  • Average Cost Price: The weighted average of all your buy prices for a stock, including commission. This is your real break-even price.
  • Current Market Price: The live price from PSX, refreshed throughout market hours (9:15 AM – 3:30 PM PKT).
  • Unrealized P&L: (Current Price − Average Cost) × Quantity. Green means profit, red means loss.
  • P&L Percentage: Your return on investment expressed as a percentage, making it easy to compare across different holdings.
  • Current Value: Live market value of your total holdings in a stock (Current Price × Quantity).

Recording SELL Trades Correctly

When you sell PSX stocks, record the SELL trade with the symbol, quantity sold, sale price, and date. The system automatically calculates your realized profit or loss and adjusts your remaining holding quantity.

Important: PSX investors often pay Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on profitable trades held for less than a year. While PSX PORTFOLIOS tracks your P&L, consult a tax advisor for your CGT obligations.

Tips for Better PSX Portfolio Management

  • Record trades on the day you execute them, while prices are fresh in your memory.
  • Create separate portfolios for different investment strategies (e.g., "Long-term holds" vs. "Short-term trades").
  • Review your portfolio P&L weekly — not daily — to avoid emotional decision-making.
  • Export your trade history to CSV at the end of each quarter for your own records.
  • Use the portfolio analytics chart to check if any single stock has grown to an outsized portion of your total investment.

Getting the Most Out of PSX PORTFOLIOS

PSX PORTFOLIOS is built specifically for the Pakistan Stock Exchange ecosystem. Unlike generic portfolio trackers, it understands PSX broker commission structures, pulls live and historical KSE prices, and is optimized for Pakistani investors.

Start with one portfolio and one or two stocks you already hold. Once you're comfortable, add the rest of your positions. Most investors find that having a clear, accurate picture of their PSX portfolio changes how they invest — for the better.
